Stretch Marks

Stretch marks (or striae as they are referred to in dermatological terms) are caused when an individual’s skin is stretched too quickly: More accurately, the skin is torn rather than stretched. They are most common around the stomach area, breasts, thighs and hips. Both men and woman can suffer from them and they affect the majority of the adult population. Fortunately, for all of us, they pose no health risks and are simply a cosmetic concern. Of course, these concerns grow in the warmer seasons as the amount of our bodies we show, increases. As a result, more people look for a stretch mark removal solution.

The most talked about cause of stretch marks is pregnancy but there are a lot of other causes as well. People who gain and lose weight can develop this scaring and so can people taking certain medications. Stretch marks can also occur as a part of some disease processes. Anything that interferes with the body’s ability to make collagen or elastin can lead to stretch marks and so can anything that stretches the skin beyond normal limits. It is most usual for these stretch marks to appear on parts of the body where there are fat deposits; this is why you see them on the abdomen area, things, and breasts.

Besides using cream, here are some of the other options for dealing with them;

Laser surgery. There are different types of laser surgery available depending on the whether the stretch mark is old or new; there are also some laser treatments that are less damaging to the surrounding tissue than others. Laser surgery isn’t too painful. You will likely need to have a consultation first before beginning this type of treatment.

Microdermabrasion. This works by removing the skin by abrasion; much in the same way as sanding paper is used to smooth down wood. Microdermabrasion involves firing tiny crystals at your skin and this will remove the outer layer of skins and hopefully stimulate new growth. This treatment is said to work well with older stretch marks.
