Perlane® adds volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds).

It is approved to treat moderate to mild creases around the mouth, but is used off label for plumping eyebrows, smoothing under-eye hollows, enhancing the lips, defining the cupid's bow (the curve of the upper lip), enhancing volume and defining contours of the cheeks, chin and jawline. Some doctors also use Perlane to soften the appearance of scars and other depressed facial marks.

What to Expect During Treatment:

Because Perlane® is a simple, nonsurgical wrinkle treatment, there is minimal recovery or down time.

When you arrive:

If this is your first visit, we will ask about your medical history, including any allergies you may have or medications you take and will explain wrinkle treatment with Perlane®.

Determining your treatment needs:

Dr. Young will examine the soft tissue of your face to assess the depth of wrinkles and folds to determine the best treatment for you. Pre and post-treatment photographs are typically taken.

Before the procedure:

Although anesthesia is not required, Dr. Young may use topical or injectable anesthesia to numb the treatment area first.

The procedure:

Perlane is injected directly into the skin slowly and safely in small amounts. The gel produces volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. The treatment generally takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area.

After the procedure:

With Perlane®, there is minimal to no recovery or down time. Depending on the individual, patients may experience swelling, itching, redness, or tenderness in the treated area. These are normal and will subside. Swelling may take longer to dissolve for lip injections. With any injection there is a risk for a bruise at the injection site. It is recommended to avoid taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. Johns Wort and high doses of Vitamin E supplements for one week after treatment. These may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site. Avoid touching the treated area within six hours following the treatment so you do not accidently injure your skin while the area is numb. Cold compresses may be used immediately after treatment to reduce swelling.

Returning to the office for your follow-up appointments is essential to ensure the best possible results.
